Cathy’s Great Uncle Private Thomas Cook Hayes who was wounded in the Flanders salient near Ypres evacuated to a hospital on the coast at Boulogne but died of his wounds. Private Hayes was involved in the actions at St. Juliaan during the gas attack by the Germans April 22-24 1915. The first major action by the Canadians after their arrival at the front.
Due to the unstable nature of the ground along the coast the headstones lay flat on the ground.
